The Paleo diet is a healthy diet rich in nutrient value that boasts a host of benefits such as weight loss and disease prevention.

The Paleo diet is a nutritional concept based on the premise that humans are healthier eating the natural foods of our hunter-gatherer ancestors rather than the more processed foods of our current time. Named for the Paleolithic Era, which was prior to the development of agriculture and animal husbandry, this diet is modeled after the ability of the hunter-gatherer society to scavenge for edible plants and animals from the wild.

Benefits of the Paleo Diet

Promoters of the Paleo diet tout a variety of advantages that are reportedly recognized by its followers. First, there is a huge decrease in toxin intake for those who adhere to this diet. Additionally, it excludes highly processed and sugar-laden foods, but is rich in nutrient value and low in salt.

The Paleo diet is known for its health benefits as well as for disease prevention. By some accounts it is one of the healthiest diets around and it is believed to provide increased energy, clearer skin, and a stronger immune system. It is also reportedly prevents such maladies as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, atherosclerosis, obesity and acne.

Foods Included in the Paleo Diet

The Paleo diet is comprised of lean meats, seafood, eggs, fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts. More specifically, meats come from large animals, wild game, chicken and organs such as liver and kidneys. Fruits include items like strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. Root vegetables such as parsnips, carrots, turnips and rutabagas are common, along with leeks and a number of different kinds of mushrooms. Additionally, a variety of nuts are acceptable including Brazil nuts, macadamias, walnuts and almonds.

Foods Excluded from the Paleo Diet

Certain items that were not available in the hunter-gatherer society are specifically excluded from the Paleo diet. Grains such as those used in cereal, bread and pasta are not used. Beans, including lentils, kidney beans, snow peas, string beans and peanuts are also excluded along with potatoes, sweet potatoes, and cashews.

Cooking for the Paleo Diet

The Paleo diet might not sound like the most exciting diet, but there are many delicious recipes available and a variety of ways to spice up Paleo cooking. For starters, milks, juices and oils can all be used as substitutions for other items. Nut milk and coconut milk can both be used in place of regular milk. Oils such as avocado or olive oil can be used instead of butter, and juices from lemons, limes, oranges, grapes and other fruits can be used to replace either vinegar or sweeteners. A variety of peppers offer a little flair in Paleo recipes, and common spices such as ginger, basil, nutmeg, and garlic are all appropriate for use with this diet.
